When Forbes released their ‘World’s Highest-Paid DJs’ list, many a jaw hit the floor.
The top ten DJs pull in some serious green. Tiesto banked $28 million last year, which is the highest the Dutch DJ has ever made. Playing at Hakkasan clearly has its perks.
David Guetta netted $30 million in the past twelve months.
The top dog, Mr. Calvin Harris, brought in a mind-boggling $66 million dollars.
So how do leading DJs in smaller markets fare?

A smaller market means smaller costs. At first glance, Mfalme’s per show fees look impressive. The numbers vary from 127,500 to 170,000…
…shillings.
Convert that to dollars and those six figures look somewhat paltry in comparison. DJ Joe Mfalme’s converted performance price tag for regional and international tours ranges from $1,500 to $2,000.
For club jaunts and nightly gigs, he runs about Sh50,000. On the college circuit, however, he ups the asking price to about Sh60,000 or Sh70,000, depending on the venue.
Again, in United States Dollars, that’s a meager conversion. Four or five hundred bucks a show.
Compare that with what the top dogs are getting in Vegas per night. Calvin Harris can bank $250,000 for a couple hour set.
But hey, cheers to capitalism, I guess.
Am I suggesting we should pity Mr. Mfalme? Not in the least bit. He’s a local legend and is absolutely killing it.
Check out his website and you’ll see his booked for the rest of the year. He owns the Nairobi nights like it’s nobody’s business.
He’s even playing the New Year’s Eve concert in Machakos People’s Park, about an hour from the capital.
Bottom line: it’s good to be an in-demand DJ, no matter if it’s in Nairobi or Nevada.
If only those shillings were worth the same in dollars.
