How To Become A Radio DJ

If music be the food love, play on!

Shakespeare knew it. We know it. Music embodies our emotional state. It has a proven chemical effect on our bodies.

You want to become a full-time DJ? I don’t blame you. It sounds like the most enjoyable job around.

Read on to find out how to become a radio DJ.

1) School is cool!

If your next step is university, time is on your side. Look into various media and broadcast journalism programs across the country. Once you’re accepted, get involved! Starting working for the on-campus radio programs as a freshman and before long, you’ll be able to host a show of your own.

2) Become an intern

Whether you’re in university or a working-world graduate, track down your favorite local stations and intern for them! Some of the most vital skill sets are acquired by osmosis. If you can be around the best, you’ll become the best. Even if you’re Coffee Runner #2, stay upbeat and hungry for opportunities. Your superiors will take note.

3) Know your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses.

So much of the radio DJ business rests on personality and affability. Hone your vocal dexterity and listening skills, qualities that will separate you from the competition. You probably think of your favorite DJ’s as old pals. Cultivate an on-air presence that draws people in.

4) Read everything!

Nowadays, DJ’s have less time to speak at length on a particular topic. This makes the few seconds of insight all the more precious. Keep your mind sharp and you’ll keep your audience. The best DJ’s live out the maxim, “brevity is the soul of wit”.

5) Eat, breathe and sleep the music.

If you can maintain your hunger, your audience will feel it. Revealing each new song in your set list should be exciting and filled with intrigue.

6) Develop an understanding for the order of songs.

Find the ebb and flow in a set list. For example, Semisonic’s ‘Closing Time’ would probably not be the most effective opener.

Remember this: iPods are great, but there’s nothing like hearing one of your favorite tracks played unexpectedly on the radio. Remember how you feel when that special song comes on and you’ll be a beloved DJ.
