Being a DJ requires a large initial investment. Quality equipment isn’t cheap. Although every DJ’s setup will vary, there is standard equipment every performer needs. Getting started can be difficult; there are countless brands and DJs never seem to agree on the best ones. This basic DJ equipment list has everything serious DJs need to consider to get their Djing career on the road.
DJ Mixer
A mixing console allows DJs to make smooth transitions between different songs. The music can come from a variety of sources, as long as the device is plugged into the mixer. Common sound sources include CD players, iPods, turntables and laptops. DJs can also plug their headphones into the mixer in order to cue the next song before playing it. Check out brands like Pioneer, Roland and Numark for the best DJ mixers.
Two CDJs
Pioneer Electronics originally developed the CDJ-300 prototype in 1992. Over the years the company has perfected the product to the point that it has become an industry standard. CDJ stands for compact disc jockey because the controllers emulate traditional vinyl turntables. CDJs are used by professional DJs in clubs around the world.
Powered Studio Monitors
Studio monitors are basically just loudspeakers. These are necessary for accurate audio reproduction. They’re used in professional recording studios and home studios. KRK and M-Audio are good brands to look into when looking for some nice speakers to use with your DJ setup.
It's important to know how and where to set your speakers up.
Headphones
Recently, there’s been a wave of DJs performing without headphones but this is not necessarily an advisable route. The only way to truly experience music is to listen to it. Without headphones, it is difficult to cue the next song in a mix. There is no easy way of knowing what pitch and tempo the next track will be in. The best DJ headphones can be somewhat expensive, but quality equipment is worth the investment.
