Becoming a DJ is a dream that seems to have infected countless kids across the planet. Ever since the radio started playing Tiesto and festivals like Ultra started taking off, everybody’s been obsessed with electronic dance music. In the 90’s, little boys and girls wanted to learn to play guitar and start rock bands. Then in the early 2000’s, teenagers everywhere started rapping. But the latest craze to be sweeping the youth off their feet is DJing. If you’re one of the many kids out there who caught the EDM fever, you’re probably asking yourself, “What do I need to become a DJ producer?”
1. Equipment
You can’t be a DJ if you don’t have the right gear, so the first step on your list should be to get yourself some DJ equipment. You’re going to need headphones, speakers, a laptop, a mixer, a controller and some DJ mixing software. Don’t worry, you don’t have to get everything all at once. You can just start with a basic beginner DJ setup and upgrade if and when needed. After you have mastered DJing you can then look at setting up your production studio, you’ll already have your laptop, speakers and headphones so all you’ll really need is some production software. Small steps though, make sure you master DJing first so that you completly understand music structure such as beats, bars, phrases and harmonics.
2. Your DJ Name
Alright, once you’re all set up with your gear and your starting to nail your mixes, the next step is to come up with your DJ name. This has to be something unique and memorable. It’s the way people are going to look you up and shout you out. Some DJ’s use their real names while others create aliases like Skrillex and Deadmau5. As long as it’s something people are going to remember then you can make your name anything you want. Be creative!
3. An Open Mind
Don’t think that just because you’ve got a sick DJ name and all of the equipment you need you can start performing all over town. Learning to DJ is the same as learning any other new skill. It takes practice, lots and lots of practice. If you’re not dedicated and you don’t keep an open mind you’ll never be able to advance.
So practice passionately and never stop learning. If you stick at it long enough you’ll begin to create your own luck and the right people will start to take notice.
