The birth of electronic music took almost a century to pan out.
In 1980, the musical instrument digital interface, or MIDI, met the market. Through this technological advancement, musicians could control electronic instruments through software and harness the full potential of digital music.
Soon after the dawn of the electronic era, music made of entirely digital instruments took over the airwaves.
Check out these three top electronic music artists 80s and see how they influenced the sounds of today.

Good ol’ Annie Lennox turned out a single that shook the dance community at its core.
‘Sweet Dreams’ mixed dark synths and a pulse-pounding bass, making a bold entrance in the electronic scene.
Eurythmics landed in the runner up slot on the UK Singles Chart of 1983 and tore up the rankings in America.

Also from the UK, New Order helped define and then consistently recreate the electronic scene. The group formed in 1980 and has expanded in popularity ever since.
From 1981 to 1984, they put out two albums that moved from experimentation of the electronic to unparalleled mastery of the genre. Hits like ‘Blue Monday’ and ‘Your Silent Face’ thrive entirely on mixing boards and synths, putting New Order in an undiscovered country.
‘Confusion’ also cemented the group as both and innovator and industry unto itself.
New Order remains one of the most requested electronic bands for film and television soundtracks.

Surprise! We’re still in Great Britain.
I think it’s fair to say that electronic music owes a lot to its UK origins.
OMD takes the cake for originality, as they set up shop in 1978. In 1980, they dropped the ‘Enola Gay’ and had a nuclear reaction (too much?) throughout continental Europe.
OMD maneuveured into the light until 1986, when their ‘Pretty In Pink’ track set the charts on fire. ‘If You Leave’ was the height of their success and defined the classic 80s film with their signature electronic sound.
