Throwing an EDM-themed wedding will sound very different depending on the generation of the newlywed couple. Electronic music fans from Generations X, Y and Z will have wedding soundtracks varying anywhere from Donna Summer to Afrojack. ‘Dance Music for Weddings by Generation’ will help newly engaged EDM fanatics, no matter their generation, decide on some perfect tracks.

Generation X, the post-World War II products of the baby boom, was lucky to experience EDM in its founding stages. 1970’s disco was the first true example of commercialized dance music. Tracks from the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ album, one of the most popular disco albums of the decade, would definitely be included in any EDM purist’s playlist, especially those from Generation X.  Donna Summer’s groundbreaking collaboration with producer Girogio Mororder in the hit song, ‘I Feel Love’, would also be a necessity in any Generation X wedding.

Generation Y, the millennials born in the 1980s-early 2000s, have experienced EDM in its most explosive stage. Between the 1980s and early 2000s, EDM has gone from a European genre mostly played in warehouse parties, to one of the most widespread and popular music genres in the world. For any Generation Y couple looking to replace the traditional Pachelbel’s Canon wedding march with a legendary EDM soundtrack, several artists are crucial to their playlist.

For starters, the 1990s classics, Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers, must be included. ‘Digital Love’ from Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’ album would be an epic wedding march. Celebrated DJs entering the scene in the later 1990s and early 2000s, such as Pete Tong, David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia and Avicii, would also be on the list. Swedish House Mafia’s ‘We Come We Rave We Love’ would be a hit in any reception packed with EDM fans.

Couples from Generation Z are probably (hopefully) not getting married anytime soon, as they were only born in the early 2000s. While it’s difficult to predict what will be the EDM favorites of this generation, paying tribute to classics is always a crowd-pleaser at weddings. EDM-loving couples from Generation Z might find themselves paying tribute to old DJ masters from their early childhood. DJs like Afrojack, Skrillex, Carl Cox and Deadmau5 may be old and grey by the time Generation Z begins to marry, but their tracks will remain key to the evolution of dance music.
