A lot of producers today make the mistake of thinking that you can convert a 320kbps mp3 file to wav in order to make a master. That’s not true at all. These processes are not the same whatsoever.

Can you convert mp3 to wav without losing quality? The short answer is no. There is absolutely no way to do this.

When you encode information into an mp3 you automatically lose some of that information. That is how mp3s work. They are known as a lossy format, while wav on the other hand is lossless.

There is nothing you can do to get the information that is lost back. It’s gone forever. Converting it into a wav file doesn’t do anything.

If you’re converting a file from wav to mp3 then you shouldn’t have any issues. Although mp3 files lose information by nature it’s usually little bits that listeners wouldn’t notice any way. That is the purpose of good mp3 encoding, it gets rid of the information that wouldn’t be detected normally.

The only way to improve the quality of an mp3 once the information is lost is through re-mastering. This is an expensive and complicated process much more time consuming than merely converting a track from one quality to another.
