I see you looking at that girl. You think she’s cute. I don’t blame you, but what are you waiting for? Sometimes talking to a girl can be a little nerve racking. If only you could express the way you feel through a song. I got your back, man. I’ll teach you how to make a good mixtape for a girl.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is figure out what kind of girl you’re dealing with. You don’t want to give an EDM lover a mixtape full of indie-rock songs. To make things easier for you we’ll just break it up into categories.

The Raver

These girls are easy to pick out by their social media feeds. You’ll probably see tweets about Ultra and pictures of her partying at Electric Daisy Carnival. She likes to rage. The raver girl’s mixtape is going to need some Diplo, a little bit of Hardwell and a sprinkle of Steve Aoki. Pretty much anything you can dance to.

The Pop Junkie

The problem with making a mixtape for a pop junkie is she probably won’t care about the songs you put on there in 3 months time. This girl is hip. She’s current. She listens to the radio. Your best bet is to just check out the Billboard top 100 and use the first 10 songs you see. The names you should be looking out for are easy to recognize. The Rihanna’s. The Beyoncé’s. You know what I’m talking about.

The Girl Next Door

This is that good girl you’re proud to tell your mom about. She’s sweet and caring and she’s got that smile that just melts your heart. She’d rather stay at home and watch Netflix than go out to the club. A good mixtape for her should probably be full of Taylor Swift, Colbie Caillat and Sara Bareilles. Female singer songwriters are perfect for the girl next door.

The Hipster

You’re going to have to be careful with this one. She might not dig anything you put on her mixtape because she’s been like totally over that for like 2 months. In fact, mixtapes aren’t even cool anymore. You’ll probably be better off avoiding newer selections and sticking with the oldies. Maybe try The Doors, Cream, and a little bit of Wu-Tang. Avoid the more recognizable song names and you should be fine. If you are going to put current tracks on the mixtape you better make sure it’s nothing she’s ever heard. Oh, and she absolutely loves vinyl.

The Quiet One

A quiet girl is a girl who spends a lot of time in her own head. She’s going to want her music to be thought provoking and inspiring. Good artists to include in her mixtape would be The XX, Nora Jones, and Regina Spektor. You’re looking for music with great lyrics and simple melodies. Something that encourages her mind to wander. You could even throw in a little Coldplay and if she’s into hip-hop you can’t go wrong with Drake.
