Being a DJ might seem like an impossible task, especially when you’re trying to balance a regular work schedule, school and friends. The world of DJing and production seems like a far stretch from real life, but don’t worry. The skills that you’re learning today can benefit your production skills and DJ Career as well.

From communication skills, learning how to budget to something as simple as just being a good person, all these skills are useful when beginning your DJ career. Here’s some tips to ensure that you’re making the most of your time everyday, to bring you success in your DJ career.

1. Be Good To People

Yeah, even this message has use beyond tedious childhood school rules. You will always meet different types of people along the way, some who’ll treat you well and be willing to help you achieve your goals, others may not be so positive. Remember that being good to people goes a long way when it comes to networking, getting work, gaining respect from your peers as well as making friends, all the while making the music you enjoy producing.

When it comes to club events, transportation and even fan encounters, the way you interact is key. Be nice to the promoter who’s been working hard at setting up the event for you. Be good to the person who transports you to and from events. Just being a nice person in general will be that much more beneficial to achieving your goals as a DJ.

2. Promoting Yourself

Being able to promote yourself as well as the kind of ideas that you have is sure to bring you the kind of success you’re seeking. Maybe you’re in retail by day and a DJ by night. You can definitely bring the skills you’ve worked on during the day to the events you’re working on. Focus on bettering your image, as well as what that might mean for the crowd that you’re trying to attract. Making and mixing music is a portion of the business, but self-representation isn’t to be neglected.

3. Mastering Communication

Communicating is a basic skill most people overlook. Your music is important, but the message you send with your music is just as important. The kind of person that you are is even more important when you think about the successful DJ’s and producers that are out there at the moment.

A lot of the time communication skills can be implemented in interview situations, record deals and in collaboration work. Strive to establish your own social persona alongside the music you create by being confident in yourself whilst remaining conscious not to become arrogant. This all takes practice, but it’s a skill that can be practices in everyday situations. Being honest, truthful and passionate about what you do are virtues that go very a long way.

4. Manage Your Money

Budgeting is important to any person’s financial stability and this includes a DJ’s expenses. Learn how to be responsible for your own personal money before you start dealing with money that you spend on promoting, touring and in the studio. Analyze what goals you’d like to achieve ahead of time and seek out the financial knowledge you need to know in order to accomplish your goals.

5. Discipline – Get The Job Done!

Discipline comes as a matter of principle that can be accomplished only through hard work. A disciplined person will meet deadlines for tracks, shows as well as taking care of social media demands without complaint. Work ethics are a major skill that many tend to neglect, ultimately leading them to feel overwhelmed or disappointed by the DJ career that they’re trying to maintain. A wise man once said “We will all have to deal with the weight of one of two things in our life everyday. The weight of discipline or the weight of regret.” The weight of regret is considerably heavier than the weight of getting the job done!
